Open-Ended Play Is a Descriptive Idea

A material can support more than one activity.

A useful distinction

Some play materials can be arranged or interpreted in different ways. Describing them as open-ended names that flexibility; it does not guarantee a developmental outcome. The child’s interests and the actual product’s guidance still belong in the decision.

Put it into practice

Observe an appropriate activity without assigning a required result. Offer choices within the relevant adult supervision and product instructions. Keep your notes about what happened in that setting, rather than promising that a category of materials will produce identical learning for every child.
